Why choose a career in childcare?

Taking care of children during some of the most important years of their lives can lead to a fulfilling and gratifying career.

Parents rely on qualified professionals to provide care and guidance to their children which is why the childcare industry is so valued. The need for childcare professionals is greater today than it has been in the past. This week, we look at some of the traits that make the best childcare educators.

Are you considering a career in childcare? The industry is booming – we’d love you to join it!

You’re passionate about education

The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery – Marak Van Doren

Those who work in the childcare industry or are currently obtaining their childcare qualifications understand the importance of early childhood education and development.

The first few years of a child’s life are some of the most important, as they develop and refine:

  • Motor skills
  • Social skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Body language
  • Logic
  • Emotions

It’s much more than simply playing with or supervising kids all day; spending that much time with children through their day-to-day learning makes you a critical component in their development and education.

The skills they develop through early learning will carry them through primary school, secondary school, and for the rest of their life!

You can learn more about the importance of early learning and education in this blog post.

You love being around children

This one’s a given, since you’ll be working with them for up to 40 hours a week!

Working alongside children at an early learning or childcare centre means you become an instrumental part of their welfare, their health, and their education.

As a childcare worker you’ll be interacting with children throughout the day:

  • Through communication like story time
  • During games and play
  • As they learn and discover
  • At designated meal and rest times

Why choose childcare career

You want a challenge!

Working in childcare is incredibly rewarding, and at the same time, it can be challenging.

Any good childcare centre will implement routine and structure, but with children, of course, there’s no telling how the day might turn out!

If you’re prepared for a challenge and ready to excel in a practical role that keeps you on your toes, you should consider a career in childcare.

Have you become complacent in your job, dreading each day that seems more mundane than the previous one? A career shake-up might be what you need!

You want a rewarding career in a growing industry

Ask any early learning educator or childcare worker to describe their job in just a few words. You’re almost guaranteed to hear the word “rewarding” in there!

You get to see children develop and learn right in front of your eyes; that feeling can only be described as jubilant!

Parents rely on childcare services to provide their children with the utmost care. A lot of trust is therefore instilled in childcare workers, which makes you realise how important you are!

What an honour it is to play such a critical role in the first few years of a child’s life.

Bonus: you’d like to manage your own centre

Experience as a childcare worker or educator can lead to progressive career advancements.

You may even consider opening and running your own childcare centre, or setting up a family day care centre in your home!

Remember though that to advance to a managerial role in a centre-based service, you will need to complete (or at minimum be working towards) your Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC50113).

The first step in your childcare career: start with the right childcare course

The first step you need to take is to explore the available courses on offer and understand the qualifications you require.

At a minimum, anyone working in an Australian childcare centre must obtain his or her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. This childcare course is now the industry’s minimum qualification required.
